A truck-mounted carpet cleaning machine generally offers several advantages over a portable carpet cleaning machine. Here’s a breakdown of why the truck-mounted option is often considered a better choice:

1. Power and Performance

  • Truck-Mounted: These machines are larger, more powerful, and have more robust motors, allowing for deeper cleaning. They generate higher water pressure, which helps in loosening dirt and grime more effectively. They also provide stronger vacuum suction, resulting in quicker drying times and more thorough removal of water, dirt, and cleaning solutions.
  • Portable: While effective for smaller jobs, portable machines typically have less suction power and lower water pressure, which might not clean carpets as deeply or as quickly as truck-mounted units.

2. Water Heating Capability

  • Truck-Mounted: Most truck-mounted units have superior heating capabilities, allowing water to reach much higher temperatures. Hot water is crucial for breaking down oils, grease, and deep-seated dirt in carpets. The temperatures of the cleaning solution when cleaning carpet or hard surface floors reaches between 160°F and 235°F allowing for sanitizing levels of clean that effectively eliminate germs, bacteria, and other unwanted matter. Scientific studies conducted on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency clearly demonstrated a large reduction in unwanted matter after cleaning carpet with a truck-mounted system
  • Portable: Some portable machines may also offer heated water, but often at lower temperatures, limiting their effectiveness against tougher stains.

3. Water and Waste Disposal

  • Truck-Mounted: These machines have larger water tanks, which means more water can be used without frequent refilling. They also carry their own waste tanks, so dirty water is extracted and disposed of automatically into the truck.
  • Portable: Portable machines have smaller tanks for both clean and dirty water, requiring frequent refilling and emptying. This can interrupt the cleaning process and extend the job time.

4. Efficiency and Profitability

  • Truck-Mounted: Due to their higher power and efficiency, truck-mounted machines can clean large areas faster. Professionals using these systems can complete the job more quickly and with better results. This allows for a higher level of income production, often up to 2-3 times more. Carpet cleaning production rates for a truck mount range between 500 to 2500 square feet per hour, depending upon the cleaning wand used and the density of furniture in the area. Portable extractors are generally limited to 300-500 square feet per hour.
  • Portable: They are slower and may require more passes over the carpet to achieve similar results, which can make the cleaning process longer and less efficient. ‘High’ powered portables require two cords that have to be plugged into separate electrical circuits within a building. Finding different circuits is difficult and time consuming.

5. Noise and Environment

  • Truck-Mounted: The noise and bulk of the machine stay outside in the truck, so the cleaning process inside the home or building is quieter.
  • Portable: Portable machines are noisier since they operate inside the space being cleaned.

6. Suitability for Larger or Commercial Jobs

  • Truck-Mounted: These machines are ideal for larger residential or commercial cleaning jobs due to their power and efficiency.
  • Portable: They are better suited for smaller areas or spaces that may be difficult to access with truck-mounted equipment, such as high-rise buildings.

7. Longevity and Deep Cleaning

  • Truck-Mounted: With their stronger extraction capability, they remove more moisture and cleaning solution from the carpet, which helps prevent mold or mildew growth. Carpets cleaned with truck-mounted machines often stay cleaner longer.
  • Portable: Although portable machines clean effectively, they may leave behind more moisture, increasing the risk of mold or needing more frequent cleanings.

8. Versatility

  • Truck-Mounted: Truckmounted equipment can be utilized to clean more surfaces at a higher cleaning rate. Professional tile and grout cleaning is most efficiently performed by truckmount utilizing a rotary hard surface cleaning wand at solution pressures from 800-1200psi. Very few portable extractors can attain those kind of cleaning pressures, and even those that can have to use cold water as no electric heater can heat that much water that fast. In addition,  your truck-mount can be utilized to pressure wash any outdoor surface the same way you would use a pressure washer. They can attain solutions pressures between 1000 and 2000psi, depending upon the model.
  • Portables: Some portables can clean hard surface floors such as tile and grout and luxury vinyl plank, but are limited in the heat and pressure they can attain to do so, requiring the use of mechanical agitation machines such as a counter-rotating brush as part of the cleaning process. Portables with pressures over 500 psi do not have on-board heaters due to the water flow rates which means you are cleaning with cold water.

Power Fun Facts

  • A typical TruckMount burns around 1 gallon of gasoline per hour. One gallon of gasoline has 125,000 btu’s of energy available. Convert btu’s to hp and you get about 50hp. So a TruckMount has 50hp available, 20 or so goes into mechanical energy, turning water pumps and vacuum pumps, 20hp goes into heating water (with heat recovery/heat exchangers), and 10hp is lost to friction and radiant heat.
  • A portable machine is limited to the energy available in the electrical system of the building. Household wiring circuits are rated to 15amps at 110v AC which equals 1650 watts (2.2hp), double that for 2 cord machine and you get 4.4hp. If you are so lucky as to find 20amp electrical circuits that goes up to a whopping 4000watts (6hp). That power has to do all the mechanical work (water pumps and vacuum pumps), but also has to heat the water if you have a ‘premium’ portable.
Bottom line – truckmounts have 8-10 times more power than portables.

When is a portable extractor the right choice?

First you have to realize there are a plethora of portable extractors out there to choose from. If your customers are used to truckmounted cleaning performance, then a lot of those choices are not really for you. You want a portable extractor that meets the definition of a high performance portable extractor. This is generally recognized as a machine with higher solution pressures (500psi), powerful vacuum performance (dual three stage blowers at a minimum), and an in-line heater (1750 – 2000w). You want the vacuum plumbed for maximum CFM rather than maximum lift for faster drying carpets (more lift is used in flood extractors that are just removing water). Finally you want to be able to load and unload the portable easier, move it around the facility, and be able to go up and down steps easier. The HydraMaster PEX500 fits this list perfectly.

A high performance portable extractor is usually better for jobs that are difficult or impossible to reach with your truckmount. This can include higher floors in buildings, large convention centers and buildings without enough access points, and occupied apartment buildings where too many people would have to step over your hoses coming from your truck. Some people prefer a portable on small jobs and call backs where you are only cleaning a small area or removing a spot. It is always a good idea to have a high performance portable extractor to use as a back-up should your truckmount or van require extended service time.

Conclusion:

Truck-mounted carpet cleaning machines are generally more powerful, efficient, and capable of handling large or tough cleaning jobs. They provide deeper cleaning with better water extraction and faster drying times, making them ideal for professional-grade cleaning. However, portable machines still have their place in smaller jobs or locations that are hard to access with a truck-mounted system.
